I have discovered something more important to me than happiness: self-respect. Even on a bad day, a day when I am far from being my own biggest fan, my integrity can remain intact. That is the ultimate measure of myself, at the end of a day, and ultimately at the end of my life. It's not about what happens to me; it is always about how I respond.
If you believe someone – anyone – is right 100% of the time, it is safe to say that you are no longer thinking for yourself. What is not safe is delegating your thinking to another individual or group. We are all responsible to evaluate ourselves with this in mind. And if your assessment tells you that you never delegate your thinking, assess again because we all do this at least some of the time. And if you read this & immediately feel defensive or defiant, please look a bit closer at your thinking. Open-mindedness can only help us – all of us – to be smarter and even wiser.
Approach conversation with the principle of
“I respect your opinion and trust my judgement.”
