Does Anybody Smell Smoke?
Does It Seem Warm in Here to You?
Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity… and I’m not sure about the universe. – Albert Einstein
Okay. Forget about Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama, both lightning rods for Republican hatred. For the next 3 or 4 paragraphs, those two people do not exist. Put some unknown, yet-to-be-revealed Democrat in the White House. (No, no, not Bernie or Elizabeth) Next: imagine that the exact same revelations (as the Trumpsters are now facing) about meetings with Russians, after repeated denials, have come to light about our hypothetical Democrat, President Whomever. Do you believe that Republicans in Congress would say that too much is being made of the news and that there are many more important things for our nation to focus on? And what do you imagine Republican response would be to Congressional Democrats who said that the “Russian thing” is no big deal?
I will tell you how they would respond. They would say that not only is the news about a presidential campaign, and now newly elected administration, working with officials in the Russian government terrifying news and completely unacceptable in our democracy, they would also make it clear that other Democrats who are minimizing and/or distracting from the crisis are complicit in supporting the U.S. government being openly influenced by the Russian government. Republicans would not hesitate to use the word “treason” and they would defy anyone who dared to object to that language.
Back to reality: The Trump campaign -- and now administration -- are in bed with Putin and the Russian government, Congressional Democrats speak up but with no shortage of modifiers and caveats. There are some journalists who are exceptions to this but for the most part, even left-leaning journalists treat what is obvious as if it is conjecture. “Time will tell whether or not what has been done is illegal,” is something I heard someone say on CNN, when referencing Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting with a Russian attorney, after being told that sensitive information from the Russian government about Hillary Clinton would be provided. And how about this one from Morning Joe Scarborough: “It is almost like there may be a cover-up of sorts.” ALMOST? MAY BE? OF SORTS?!
There are a few out there – Congressmen/women and journalists – who are saying exactly what needs to be said without watering any of it down. And those people are also the ones who understand that the only way to take a stand like this is to be devoted to repetition. Repetition. I said repetition. Over-and-over again – not just once or twice, not just 50 times. Ted Cruz thinks that the “Russian thing” is not important. That makes him complicit with the treasonous acts of this presidential administration. Ted Cruz thinks that the “Russian thing” is not important. That makes him complicit with the treasonous acts of this presidential administration. Repeat.
What I am saying and how I am saying it may seem over the top to some readers. Those readers will most certainly be fair-minded, rational democrats – sane, intelligent people. But there is such a thing as pathological fairness and there are times when a calm, rational response is insane. Whispering, “Fire. Fire. It is on the warm side in here, kind of almost hot really, and the smoke is not easy to breathe. I am thinking that possibly it would be a good idea maybe for us to consider leaving the building.”
NO. It is like this: FIRE!!! And like this: TREASON!!
